The electrical industry has received encouraging news as the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works and Infrastructure announced a significant shift towards investing in skilled artisans rather than relying heavily on outsourced contractors.
According to MEC Martin Meyer, the department currently spends more than R25 million each year outsourcing essential maintenance work, including electrical services. In response, the department has begun recruiting its own artisans, with 25 new artisans already appointed, as part of a broader strategy to improve service delivery while reducing unnecessary expenditure.
The department has also committed R2.5 million towards artisan training, continuous professional development and digital skills development during the 2026/27 financial year.
Perhaps the most significant announcement is the acknowledgement that there is a severe shortage of electricians and other artisans across the province. To address this, the department has entered into partnerships with several TVET colleges to strengthen the pipeline of qualified artisans entering the industry.
This is welcome news for the electrical trade.
South Africa continues to experience a shortage of competent electricians at a time when electrical infrastructure, renewable energy installations and compliance requirements are becoming increasingly complex. Investment in training not only creates employment opportunities but also contributes to safer electrical installations and improved public infrastructure.
