Electricity Extortion Watch: Daily Maverick Launches Public Reporting Initiative
Daily Maverick has launched Electricity Extortion Watch, a public-interest initiative aimed at documenting and exposing alleged incidents of electricity-related extortion, intimidation and unlawful disconnections involving individuals claiming to represent City Power, Eskom, contractors or subcontractors.
The initiative follows numerous reports from residents across Johannesburg who allege that officials or contractors have disconnected electricity supplies, threatened disconnections, or demanded immediate payments without following proper legal or administrative processes. According to Daily Maverick, affected residents report being pressured into making substantial payments under threat of prolonged power outages, often without receiving adequate proof of the amounts allegedly owed.
Electricity Extortion Watch seeks to provide a platform for residents and businesses to report suspected misconduct, identify patterns of abuse, and encourage greater accountability within the electricity supply sector. The project also aims to assist journalists in investigating systemic issues affecting consumers and communities.
The launch comes amid broader concerns regarding electricity governance, billing disputes, municipal debt, and increasing tensions between electricity consumers and supply authorities. Daily Maverick has called on members of the public who believe they have experienced unlawful disconnections, intimidation, bribery demands, or extortion relating to electricity services to come forward and share their experiences.
For consumers, the initiative highlights the importance of understanding their rights, keeping records of interactions with officials and contractors, and seeking independent advice where the legality of a disconnection or demand for payment is in dispute.
